IT’S GOING OUT! Sunday, January 24, 2010 Edition
Matthew 17 14 And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, 15 Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. 16 And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. 17 Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. 21 Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
In verse 21, Jesus declared that “this kind” goes out by prayer and fasting. What goes out? I have heard some people say "...devils go out..." and I have heard others say "...faith goes out...." I want to share with you another instance of what the Word proclaims about prayer and fasting.
Luke 2 36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
In this instance and instances from Ruth to Jesus Christ and those before and after, “this kind” that comes out is speech, uttered from a heart filled with faith! Question: According to scripture, does faith come out or do words come out? Jesus taught His disciples that if you have faith, “…ye shall say….” I present to you what the Holy Spirit taught me while I enjoyed communion with Him a few moments ago. When you fast and pray, a certain kind of faith is in you which will cause a certain kind of speech to go out of you. Nobody can fake faith. Words of faith will work in your favor. Words of doubt will not. Prayer and fasting builds faith in you so that faith-filled words will (shall) go out of you. The term, “shall” relates an extremely strong sense of definite occurrence. There are some words you will DEFINITELY say that will be faith-filled (of God and His power to perform what is being said) when you fast and pray. There are some things you will DEFINITELY say that will be doubt-filled (of satan and his power to perform what is being said) when you do NOT fast and pray. Please notice that it is not prayer alone and it is not fasting alone that Jesus taught about. Prayer AND fasting must be given to God for “this kind” of speech to go out of you. If you do not like what you are saying, pray and fast!!!!!!! When you do, answer this question:
What goes out of you when you pray and fast?
